What High Jewelry Means Here

High jewelry is a working definition, not a marketing one. It means the stones are chosen individually rather than ordered by the parcel. It means the metal is carved by hand in wax before anything is cast. It means one jeweler is accountable for the piece from the first sketch to the last setting. For over forty years that jeweler has been Lazaro Diaz, working out of the same shop on West Broadway in SoHo.

Materials

Eighteen karat yellow and white gold. Sterling silver carved and oxidized for depth. Black and white diamonds, grey diamonds, ruby, sapphire, black opal, green tourmaline, tsavorite, and South Sea pearl. Stones are set in house, one at a time, not sent out.

How These Pieces Are Made

Most of this collection begins as lost wax. The design is carved in wax by hand, cast in gold or silver, then finished, oxidized where the piece calls for it, and set. It is slow, and it is the reason no two pieces come out identical even when the design repeats. Nothing here is cast from a stock mold or finished offshore.

One of Each

Every piece in this collection exists in a quantity of one. Not a numbered edition, not a limited run of fifty. When a piece sells, that design is gone unless it is commissioned again, and a commission is never quite the same piece twice.

High End Men's Jewelry, Made in New York

Luxury men's jewelry is a thin category. Most of what carries the label is a lighter version of something designed for someone else, or a logo applied to a stock casting. Lazaro SoHo has spent since 1981 building fine jewelry for men as its own discipline, in New York, by hand. The work has been worn on stage, on magazine covers, and by people who could buy anything and chose this.
